VENEZIA 2023: The Settimana Internazionale della Critica unveils 2023 artwork

“Our body surrendered to the light.
Offered as a sacrifice in our name”

For the third consecuitive year, Mauro UzzeoEmiliano Mammucari and Fabrizio Verrocchi designed the Settimana’s 2023 artwork:
“We started off with an embrace, then continued with the firm resolution of reclaiming lost spaces, unrepresented identities, the places of the soul kept hidden because too troublesome or excessively disturbing.
The time has come, therefore, to put away weapons and armour, to drop masks and cloaks, and let the body itself become the battlefield.
A body which is feared, adored, concealed, exposed, wounded, protected, desired, mutilated, preserved, hated and loved – capable of arousing wonder, horror, tenderness, awe.
That body, which is our body, becomes a cinematic screen, surrendering itself and inviting a stream of light to invest it, piercing the darkness, setting its outline, its shape in sharp relief.
Its story.
Which is every story.
Because it is from the body, for the body, on the body – the one meeting point between intention and representation – that the cinematic gaze is able to tear through the veil of illusion permeating the reality that surrounds us, in order to decipher its symbols.
The body is what we offer.
The body is what we are.”

The Settimana Internazionale della Critica (SIC) is an independent section of the Venice International Film Festival, dedicated to debut feature films. Now in its 38. edition, it will take place from 30 August to 9 September 2023.
