SINOSSI | SYNOPSIS
Un lungometraggio indipendente basato sulla storia vera di rifugiati Afghani, il loro desiderio di sopravvivere, e sulle drammatiche condizioni nelle quali si trovano nel corso del loro viaggio. Diretto da Sonia Nassery Cola, il film segue le vicende di Massoud, un giovane uomo, il quale intraprende un pericoloso viaggio dall’Afghanistan attraverso l’Iran, la Turchia, la Grecia è la Germania, accompagnato da una dottoressa incinta e da un anziano saggio. Dopo essere stato testimone dell’uccisione del padre da parte dell’ISIS, Massoud è intenzionato a onorare il desiderio paterno di assicurare alla madre e alla sorella un futuro sicuro lontano dalla tirannia dei Talenani e dell’ISIS. L’attuale migrazione dei rifugiati è la più grande alla quale stiamo assistendo dopo quella della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. I AM YOU è un evocativo racconto di resilienza di quelle persone costrette ad abbandonare la loro terra attraversando momenti traumatici e difficili nel tentativo di cercare la speranza.
An independent feature film based on the true story of Afghan refugees, their will to survive, and the dramatic conditions they endure on their journeys. Directed by Sonia Nassery Cole, we follow Massoud, a young man, who embarks on a perilous migration from Afghanistan through Iran, Turkey, Greece and Germany, accompanied by a pregnant doctor and an aged wise man. After witnessing the loss of his father at the hands of ISIS, Massoud vows to honor his late father’s wish to secure a safe future for his mother and sister away from the tyranny of the Taliban and ISIS. The current refugee crisis is the largest since WWII; I AM YOU is an evocative depiction of the resilience of those forced to flee in their countries and overcome trauma and hardship in search of hope.

After escaping to the U.S. during the Soviet invasion, Sonia wrote a letter to President Reagan, he in turn invited her to the Oval Office to discuss the conflicts in Afghanistan. Serving on the Board of the Afghanistan Relief Committee formed by past U.S. Ambassadors to Afghanistan, Sonia’s human rights activism began. Ms. Cole was asked to assemble a major fund-raising event where she obtained the backing of then Vice President George H.W. Bush, who served as an Honorary Chairman of her first fund-raising event, A Night for Afghanistan. Not long afterward Sonia was recognized with a Peace Medal at the United Nations. She is the recipient of a “Congressional Recognition” award on December 4, 2006, “Afghan American Sisterhood Award,” and the “UN Women Together Award” on June 7, 2012. In 2013, she received the Freedom to Write Award from PEN Center USA. In 2007 Ms. Cole completed an award winning documentary “The Breadwinner.” In 2011 she completed “Black Tulip”, serving as director, producer and writer. Based on true events, “Black Tulip” is a journey of tragedy, struggle and hope that encompasses the current plight of the Afghan people. After the film was made Sonia relived her struggles of producing this film by writing the book “Will I Live Tomorrow,” the journey of making a film in the middle of war zone Afghanistan against the Taliban. “Black Tulip” was the official Afghan submission to the 2011 Academy Awards. The film has garnered numerous accolades since, receiving top honors at over 11 film festivals. The well received “Black Tulip” was featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, the New York Times, Reuters, Voice of America and many more. Following our 9/11 Tragedy and the international US-led coalition response, Sonia realized the need to give voice to the voiceless people of Afghanistan. Forming the Afghanistan World Foundation in May 2002, she raised significant funds to aid the building of hospitals and schools.
Recensione di Anna Piccini : Quando si parla di rifugiati, bisognerebbe avere a mente questa storia vera raccontata con questo film “I Am You”. Una storia di atrocità indicibili. Una storia che ti lascia senza fiato. Un film di rara potenza espressiva, e di rara emozione. Realizzato in modo indipendente da Sonia Nassery Cole, di nascita Afghana e naturalizzata USA. Che ha vissuto sulla propria pelle l’esperienza di rifugiata. Essendo scappata dal proprio paese all’età di soli 14 anni. Ci torna adesso , con grande coraggio, a girare questo film. Che non e’ stato semplice girare in un paese in guerra, dove ancora ci sono gravi pregiudizi sul lavoro femminile in una parte non irrilevante della popolazione. Le immagini sono state “rubate” per le strade di Kabul e di altre città dell’Afghanistan, non avendo avuto le necessarie autorizzazioni per farlo. E questo da maggiore valore a questo film. Che ci da una lezione di vita e ci fa essere più umili. Da non perdere.
